Well known South African bow hunter and 3-D champion, Pierre van Wyk, recently committed his and the African Bowhunting Organisation's (ABO) support for HuntEx2011. ABO regards this as a step in the right direction to introduce and promote the skill of archery and bow hunting among the larger hunting community.
HuntEx is the SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association's (SAHGCA) new, annual hunting exhibition which, after receiving a major facelift, will be held at Gallagher Convention Centre from 15 - 17 April 2011.
Pierre van Wyk has been involved with bowhunting for the past 16 years and is the current MBO South African bowhunting champion, a title he has won three times already. He also holds several other international titles such as the IFAA World Bowhunting Championship in 2003 en 2005. He is one of ABO's four Master Bowhunting instructors and compiled the organisation's Bowhunting Certificate of Proficiency (COP).
Pierre applies his skill and love for bowhunting to promote the sport in South Africa. He serves on the Wildlife Forum where he and other hunting enthusiasts from SAHGCA contribute to policy and practices aimed at protecting the interest of hunting and bowhunting.
In 2005 Pierre identified a huge gap in all competency aspects of bowhunting and together with a few other bowhunting enthusiasts, established the African Bowhunting Organisation (ABO),which is currently one of the biggest bowhunter organisations in the country. Some of South Africa's best 3D archers are members of ABO: an achievement that ABO is very proud of.
Bowhunting and archery is a sport that almost anyone can participate in. ABO has 19 categories in which children, women, novices and more proficient shots can develop their skills. Hundreds of ABO members have achieved competency certificates which they renew every two years.
During its six-year existence, ABO has shown its dedication in protecting its members" interests and boosting the public's interest in bowhunting and archery as a sport and recreation activity. Supporting HuntEx2011, was a logical next step for ABO to expand its membership and promote its activities to a wider audience.
`We are looking forward to teach visitors at HuntEx2011 about archery / bowhunting. We also hope that it will encourage those who have been contemplating about taking up this sport, to do so without further delay," Pierre said. ABO's participation at HuntEx2011 will include a bowhunting 3-D competition, demonstrations by world champions in the hunting and target disciplines and a series of information and theoretical workshops for new and more advanced bowhunters.
The organisers of HuntEx2011, namely the SAHGCA and AmaConference, are very pleased to have the support of ABO so early in the planning stages of the Expo. According to Adriaan Woudstra from AmaConference, there are many rifle hunters and members of the SAHGCA that are also competent bowhunters. "The results from a survey held among hunters indicated a lively interest in bowhunting. The co-operation between ABO and HuntEx is a win-win situation for both parties. We are confident that ABO will add value to the hunting experiences that HuntEx will offer," said Adriaan.
