Internet Shopping Delivers a Mixed Bag of Results

The internet hunt to save money on the purchase of hunting equipment has delivered a mixed bag of results and Pot-Shot reports on its experience to date.

Pot-Shot takes pleasure in sharing its findings on three products which were compared with each other on three international and two local web sites. The three international web sites were Cabela's, Opticwarehouse and Opticplanet.

Transport costs could not be compared on the overseas web sites as none of them were willing to accept an address in Johannesburg for shipping. VAT of 14% and 14% import duty were looaded onto the prices. It is a criminal ofence to import products without paying VAT and import duty.

1. The first product that came under scrutiny was the Victory 10x45 T*RF binoculars, for which Opticwarehouse provided the best price of R20 394. VAT and import duty pushes the price up to R26 504.

In contrast Cabela's all inclusive price was R29 153, the same as that of Opticplanet.

Locally, Oneshop offered the same product at R32 915.

A web site was found where the same product was offered at R6 500. Further investigation proved that that was a wholesale price and that a minimum order of 70 was required.

2. The second product on our list was the Leopoldt VX 3L 4.5-14x50 telescope and here prices were only compared between two web sites - Cabela's and Safari&Outdoor.

Cabela's price without shipping costs came to R9 763, while Safari&Outdoor's price without shipping costs was R9 500.

3. The third product was the Nikon Monash 3-9x40 telescope where Opticplanet was compared to Oneshop. Opticplanet's price without shippings costs was R3 023, while Oneshop charged R3 123 excluding shipping costs.

One of the conclusions reached was that one first has to determine whether shipping to South Africa is done and what it costs. None of the three web sites tested were willing to ship to an address in Johannesburg, including Cabela's. It is strange, because some readers have indicated that they did indeed buy from Cabela's and had products shipped to them. This will be looked at again this week when we compare ammunition costs.

It is a fact that the overseas web sites provided a wider variety of products than is available locally.
