Sako, the third most popular manufacturer in South Africa, has a superb range of weapons from Varmint to Hunter and Deluxe models.
Sako prides itself on its ability to tailor-make guns for hunters with lots of finer additions. Sako 85 Hunter has a series of designated actions, including short action, extra short (XS), Short (S) and short magnum (SM), medium action (M) and long action (L). The actions continue to offer traditional SAKO features such as: action sizes, matched to cartridges; mechanical ejection and integral tapered scope mount rail.
This is a lighter rifle and its range is from a 204 Ruger to a 308 Win. It is ideal for smaller game, but one can even hunt kudu with it. The magazine is detachable and it can also be loaded through the ejection port. Magazine release is protected against accidental release. The single-set trigger pull is adjustable from 1 kg to 2 kg (2 to 4 lbs). All models are available with a single-stage trigger as option. The safety features include a mechanism that allows loading and unloading of the rifle with safety engaged.
Other features are: magazine capacity 5; overall length 1100 mm; barrel length 600 mm and weight 3,7 kg. The straight, walnut Stock with wide fore-end is oil finished.
This range from the 204 Ruger to a 375 H&H Mag. The technical detail is the same as the Varmint, although the Hunter is considerable lighter with a weight of between 2,9 to 3,5 kg for the H&H Mag.
The Deluxe is a beautiful weapon and only available in medium action. Its caliber ranges from 25-06 Rem to a 9,3x66 Sako. Its overall length is 1 085 mm with a barrel length of 550 mm. Weight is 3.3 kg. The rest of the technical detail is the same as for the others.
A new Sako will cost anything between R22 000 and R24 000 depending on the kaliber
