What Yanks Pay to Hunt in SA

Latest News

Ever wondered what it costs a hunter from the United States to visit South Africa? This past week some light was shed on this matter when an America sent out an S.O.S. to compatriots to join him on a trip to a Limpopo ranch.

He was asking for a second Yank to join him on the same package, the second person, a non-hunter, getting a bargain price of a mere R1 280 per day or R8 960 for a week. Ten days will only cost him R12 800. The saving on the seven day package is R16 240, while it is R23 200 on the ten day package.

That means that in ordinary circumstances the first package would have cost R25 200 - or R3 600 per day. The second package normally costs R36 000 - also a bargain at R3 600 per day. And that is the rate for a non-hunter.

The hunter's trip will cost him a mere R34 825, which includes shooting five animals. It boils down to R4 970 per day for seven days. The ten day hunter will be able to shoot six animals. It will cost him the neat some of R63 800 or R6 380 per day. And that is at a very big discount.

If a group can be gathered, additional savings can be accumulated on other non-hunters.

Our enterprising Yank is leaving this month and is travelling from Orlando to Johannesburg return at the "cheapest air fare in years" - a mere R9 280.

Packages include everything except airfare from the USA, taxidermy and gratuity. There are no hidden costs and visitors are transported from Oliver Tambo and back in luxury vehicles.

Visitors must have all gun documents complied with before arrival or may use the game farm's weapons at no charge. All meals, hunting vehicles, government license fees, VAT (17%), preparation of trophies and transporting it to a taxidermist, daily laundry service, a professional hunter, trackers, skinners, beverages and photographs and videos are included.

For hunters the seven day package includes five animals - zebra or gemsbok, blue wildebeest, impala, warthog, steenbok or duiker (can adjust up or down off menu with other animals). There is no charge for shooting baboons, jackals or monkeys.

The ten day package includes six animals - kudu or waterbuck, zebra or gemsbok, blue wildebeest, impala, warthog, steenbok or duiker (can adjust up or down). There is also no charge for baboons, jackals or monkeys.
