TOPS Notices Creates problems

The TOPS notices published earlier this year created various problems of which the main one is the attempted listing of the sable on the TOPS list. WRSA has responded to the Departments setting out the arguments as to why the recent TOPS notice is problematic.

Synthetic Rhino Horn May Be On The Cards

A San Francisco biotech company, Pembient, has discovered that it is possible to create synthetic rhino horn and has developed an artificial horn that is genetically indistinguishable from the real thing, and is also spectrographically and genetically similar to rhino horn.

Rhinos Without Borders Commences With Airlifts to Botswana

CBS News reported last week that the Rhinos without Borders initiative has commenced operations with the mission to save local rhinos from extinction. It aims to airlift 100 rhinos from South Africa to safe havens in Botswana, which has a zero-tolerance policy towards poaching.

Media Statement on announcement of the Committee of Inquiry to deliberate on matters relating to a possible trade in rhino horn

The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa today introduced the Committee of Inquiry tasked with investigating the feasibility of a trade in rhino horn. On 22 January 2014 Minister Molewa announced that once pre-screening and vetting by the State Security Agency (SSA) was completed, that the names would be publically released.

Hunting association pays tribute to wildlife stalwart

Former CEO of the Natal Parks Board, Dr George Hughes, acknowledged the role that responsible hunters in South Africa play as stakeholders in the `greatest wildlife industry in the history of the world'. Dr Hughes recently received the Order of the Bataleur from the SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association (SAHGCA) for his significant contribution to biodiversity and wildlife conservation.

Record Poaching in 2014, SANParks Reviewing Rhino Tenders Again

1,155 rhinos were poached in South Africa in 2014. In light of this record figure SANParks are again starting a tender process to sell rhino to private buyers in an attempt find safe havens.
